Alexander J. Nocera, 94, formerly of Mable Street, died Friday, August 12, 2011 at Avalon Nursing Center in New Castle. He was born January 30, 1917 in Curwensville, Pennsylvania a son of the late John and Nazzarene Nocera. He was married to Clara (Fazzone) Nocera who died on March 28, 1995. Mr. Nocera worked for Republic Steel in Youngstown, OH for 4 years. He then worked for the New Castle School District as a janitor for over 10 years. Mr. Nocera worked for Dunkin Donuts for over 20 years and was a self-employed painter for over 30 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal with Clasp and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 8 Bronze Stars and 1 Bronze Arrowhead. Mr. Nocera also enjoyed dancing, bowling, and was a hard worker all of his life.
He is survived by two sons, Gary Nocera and his wife Bonnie of Girard, PA, and Allan Nocera and his wife Donna of New Castle, one sister, Apolina Calisi of Huntington, NY, five grandchildren, Lisa Nocera, Deanna Nocera-Falanga, Shaun Nocera, Shannon Nocera, and Gary Nocera, and one great granddaughter, Leila Nocera.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Fred Nocera, and three sisters, Mary Carbone, Helen Nocera Rodriguez, and Jean Ierulli.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Vitus Church. Father Sean Francis of St. Vitus Church will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 A.M. Burial will be in the St. Vitus Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the cemetery.
