Salvatore B. ‘Sam’ Rotunno, 85, of E. Reynolds Street, died Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle. He was born March 12, 1926 in New Castle, the son of the late Marion and Anna (Pisano) Rotunno. He married Helene E. (Pallerino) Rotunno on June 23, 1951, she survives in New Castle. Mr. Rotunno was Superintendent of Fleet Operations for the US Postal Service retiring after 30 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving on the USS Marblehead as a Fireman First Class. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and was an avid local sports fan, attending every sporting event his granchildren participated in. Mr. Rotunno also enjoyed watching golf on TV, gardening, and tinkering. He was dearly loved by his family and was his grandchildren’s biggest fan.
He is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Sheldone and her husband Carmen, Lisa Dudash and her husband David, and Maryanne Genareo and her husband Michael, all of New Castle, two sisters, Irene Aluisia and her husband Domenick, and Rose Hobel, both of New Castle, four grandchildren, Justin Sheldone, Lauren Sheldone Laidler, Ryan Dudash, and Jason Dudash, and two great grandchildren, Ashtyn and Alissandra Sheldone.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue, on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Vitus Church. Father Sean Francis of St. Vitus Church will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the St. Vitus Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military funeral rites at the cemetery.
