John Donofrio, Jr., 93, of DuShane St., died Monday, December 19, 2011 at his home in New Castle. He was born March 29, 1918 in Hillsville, a son of the late John and Nicoletta (Lagnese) Donofrio. He was married to the late Nettie (Gillest) Donofrio, who died on February 17, 2011. Mr. Donofrio was a mill rite at Sharon Steel retiring after 40 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 30th Old Hickory Infantry, 113th Field Artillery Battalion. He participated in five battles, earning five stars for Northern France, Omaha Beach in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He also served during the Battle of the Bulge. He received the award of Meritorious Service for service from June 15, 1944 to August 15, 1944. Mr. Donofrio also enjoyed gardening and yard work.

He is survived by two daughters, Patty Trover and her husband Lloyd, and Jeri Hake and her husband Joseph, all of New Castle, one brother, William Donofrio of New Castle, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Samuel, Patrick, Joseph, Anthony, and Frank Donofrio, and four sisters, Theresa Ferrari, Martha Gurierri, Josephine Rotz, and Eleanor Micco.

Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home on Thursday, December 22, 2011 from 5 PM to 8 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 23, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Vitus Church. Father Sean Francis of St. Vitus Church will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the funeral home on Thursday night. Entombment will be in the Castle View Memorial Gardens.
