Robert L. Hammers, 71, of W. Cherry St., Mahoningtown, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. He was born October 9, 1940 in Edinburg, a son of the late Robert and Ida (Myers) Hammers. He was married to Ann M. (Fontana) Hammers on June 23, 1962, she survives in Mahoningtown. Mr. Hammers was a pressman for Shenango China for 26 years. He then worked at Rockwell International for 3 years. He retired from the Lawrence County Jail as a corrections officer after 16 years. Mr. Hammers was an avid bowler, softball player, and he enjoyed walking. He also was an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan.

He is survived by two children, Frank A. Hammers and his wife Beverly of Hillsville, and Rebecca A. Sallmen of New Castle, three sisters, Dorothy Santillo of Carson City, NV, Janet Linz of New Castle, and Marlene Cameron of New Wilmington, and six grandchildren, William Penwell and his wife Mary, Brad Penwell, Alexandra Hammers, Joseph Sallmen, Josh Sallmen, and Danielle Sallmen.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Hammers, three sisters, Barbara Black, Audrey Hamburg, and Ann Wohlgemuth.

Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 from 4 PM to 8 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Father Frank Almade of St. Vincent de Paul Parish will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM. Burial will be in the St. Lucy Cemetery in New Castle.
