Sylvester J. ‘Doc’ Margel, 87, formerly of Randolph St. for over 50 years, died Thursday afternoon, April 21, 2005 at Jameson Hospital South in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was born January 27, 1918 in New Castle, Pennsylvania the son of Joseph and Magdalena (Schwartz) Margel, they precede him in death. He married the late Helen Pakovitch Margel on February 14, 1950 and they were married for 51 years until her death on December 10, 2001. Mr. Margel worked on the Assembly Line at Rockwell Axle Division retiring after 32 years and served in the United States Army during World War II. He was an overseas Engineer Locomotive Technician 4th Grade, serving with Co. C 722nd Railway operating battalion. He served in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal, EAME Theater Service Medal with 4 bronze stars and the Victory Medal. Mr. Margel was a beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather and adored his family and made friends where ever he went with his charm and charisma. He enjoyed horse racing, hockey and dancing. He was an All-Star pitcher for the Lawrence Indies in the late 1940's, nicknamed, "Doc Savage".

He is survived by one daughter, Mariann Ritchie of New Castle, PA, her husband, Albert J. Ritchie and their children, Christin, Albert, Emily, Michael and Daniel, one son, Robert S. Margel, Sr. of New Castle, PA, and his wife, Paula Freed Margel and their children, Stephanie, Carly, Anna and Robert, Jr., 13 great grandchildren, Marie, Kaileah, Donavan, Harli, Haley, Kyla, Dominic, Jonathan, Allie, Madison, Joshua, Nicolas and Gianna and one sister, Theresa Laitien of New Castle, PA.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his infant sister Katherine Margel.

A private visitation and service will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Parkside Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform a Military Funeral Service at the Cemetery.
