Thomas E. Barber, 85, of New Castle, died Tuesday afternoon, June 7, 2005 at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was born November 2, 1919 in Martins Ferry, Ohio the son of Francis and Bertha (Fleahman) Barber, they precede him in death. He was married to the former Alberta E. Berry Barber who died February 6, 2002. Mr. Barber was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 30 years. He was a Marines veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater as a 1st Lieutenant. He was a survivor of the first wave of Marines to land at Guadalcanal and for his service received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Barber was also an avid sportsman and a former State Champion in Archery. He also played on the 1936 Martins Ferry, OH undefeated football team and attended Chattanooga University of a football scholarship.
He is survived by 4 daughters, Sandra Denny of Dana Point, CA, Constance Barber of Newport Beach, CA, Mrs. Joseph (Susan) Martin of New Castle, PA and Mrs. Mowry (Rebecca) Young of Poland, OH, 4 brothers, Richard Barber of Lowell, MA, Jack Barber of Coco Beach, FL, William Barber and Robert Barber both of New Castle, PA, 1 sister, Phoebe Flynn of New Castle, PA, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Barber, and his sister Edith Helms.
Arrangements are by the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home. A Private Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery.
