Mary L. Hakala, 84, of Denny Dr., died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle. She was born October 13, 1927 in Pulaski, a daughter of the late Clifford Dixon Gilliland and Mary (Wallace) Gilliland. She was first married to Frank Burkes who precedes her in death. Then she married Victor Hakala who also precedes her in death. Mrs. Hakala was a homemaker and a member of Westley Methodist Church. She also worked for a short time at Johnson Bronze and Golden Hill Nursing Home. She was an avid gardener, and she loved animals and bird watching.
She is survived by five children, Richard T. Burkes of New Castle, William Burkes of New Castle, Teddy A. Burkes of Bucyrus, OH, Frank J. Burkes of New Castle, and Mrs. Ted (Cindy) Kosciuszko of New Castle, one sister, Sally Zurasky of New Castle, ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Frank Burkes III, one daughter, Pamela Louise Woessner, three brothers, Calvin, Theron, and Edwin Gilliland, and three sisters, Lorene Rayner, Twila Catone, and Marguerite Marshall.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue, on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 from 5 PM to 8 PM.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the William F. DeCarbo Memorial Chapel. Pastor Nancy K. Shute of Westley Methodist Church will be officiating. Burial will be in the Neshannock Presbyterian Church Cemetery in New Wilmington.
