John G. Freed, 79, of US 422, New Castle, died Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle. He was born November 5, 1934 in New Castle, a son of the late John and Katherine (Ferketich) Freed. He was married to Nancy (Johns) Freed on May 3, 1958 and was very proud of their 55 years together. John was in business for himself for most of his adult life. He was a smart business man and a hard worker, he didn't stop working until the last year of his life. He was an Army and Air Force veteran of the Korean Era serving in Germany. John was a Christian and a member of the First Assembly of God Church. His hobby was riding his Harley with his wife and friends, which he bragged that he rode on his 78th birthday, a cold day in November of 2012, he only got to ride one more time after that. John enjoyed boxing, fishing, hunting, and ice skating when he was younger. He was recruited as a teenager to become a professional ice skater. His love was his wife, kids, grandkids, his cats and his Harley.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, John A. Freed of Townsend, DE, Cindy L. Lescarbeau and her husband Stephen of Ormond Beach, FL, and Deborah K. Fagan of New Wilmington, one sister, Alice Peterson of Milwaukee, WI, one brother-in-law, Gary Johns and his wife Sharon of New Castle, eight grandchildren, Christian and Joey Retort, John Rocco, Brielle Fagan, John and Anthony Freed, and Julian and Jensen Lescarbau, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Bonnie Katherine Freed.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue, on Monday, December 30, 2013 from 5 PM to 8 PM.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the William F. DeCarbo Memorial Chapel. Rev. Chad Steocker of First Assembly of God Church and Rev. Kenneth Meyer will be officiating. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery.
