Frank J. ‘Gig’ Gagliardo, 81, of North Vine Street, New Castle, died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler. He was born May 20, 1932 in New Castle, a son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Angiolelli) Gagliardo. He married Shelvie J. (Jones) Gagliardo on August 23, 1958, she survives in New Castle. Mr. Gagliardo was a Lieutenant for the New Castle Police Department retiring after 40 years. He was a former acting Chief and was Captain of the Detectives for a number of years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Era. Mr. Gagliardo was also a County Detective for the District Attorneys Office for 6 years. He was a 3rd Ward Committee Person for many years and a member of the Board of Trustees for Slippery Rock State University and served as Secretary of the Board. Mr. Gagliardo coached youth baseball for many years with the New Castle Amateur Baseball Association and served as Secretary of the Association. He was a member of St. Vitus Church, the Duke's Club, Eagles and Fraternal Order of Police. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed horseracing and going to the casino.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joseph F. Gagliardo of New Castle, and Samuel E. Gagliardo and his wife Brenda of New Castle, one brother, Steve Gagliardo of New Castle, two sisters, Sally Dantonio of New Castle, and Helen Morgan of New Castle, and four grandchildren, Samantha J. Gagliardo, Frank Z. Gagliardo, Vincent E. Gagliardo, and Joseph C. Gagliardo.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Carmen Gagliardo, and one sister, Dora Fagan.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 24, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Vitus Church. Father Nick Vaskov of St. Vitus Church will be officiating.
