William H. Eckhardt, 84, of Stanton Avenue, New Castle, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Rhodes Estates in New Castle. He was born September 22, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania a son of the late Walter and Mary (Mann) Eckhardt. He married Mary E. (Elmeier) Eckhardt on June 12, 1954, she survives in New Castle. Mr. Eckhardt was the shop foreman at Western State Penitentiary retiring after 12 years. Prior to that he was a machinist at Schroeder Brothers in McKees Rocks, PA. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Era serving in Germany. Mr. Eckhardt was a member of VFW Post 2454, Robert D. Fleming Post in Bellevue, PA and he enjoyed bingo, bowling, fishing, gardening and taking day trips with his wife.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by eight children, Mary Grace Mravintz and her husband Raymond of New Castle, William Eckhardt and his wife Linda of Springdale, PA, Gary Eckhardt of Pittsburgh, PA, Wayne Eckhardt and wife Adeline of Pittsburgh, PA, Donna Eckhardt of New Castle, Anita Eckhardt and companion Joe Kaib of Pittsburgh, PA, Nancy Boice and husband David of New Castle, and John Eckhardt of Pittsburgh, PA, one brother, Adam Eckhardt of Pittsburgh, PA, one sister, Ruth Rosenberger of Pittsburgh, PA, seventeen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Walter, two brothers, Walter and Larry Eckhardt, and four sisters, Amy Witsch, Geraldine Kirschner, Irene Uphiel, and Edna Phillips.

Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue, on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 5 PM to 8 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph the Worker Church. Father Mike Ackerman of St. Joseph the Worker Church will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM. Burial will be in the Castle View Memorial Gardens. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in the name of William Eckhardt to the Alzheimer’s Association.
