Anthony J. ‘Tony’ Quahliero, Sr., 79, of Dutch Lane, Hermitage, PA, formerly of New Castle, died Saturday afternoon, November 15, 2008 at Haven Nursing Home. Tony was born March 14, 1929 in New Castle, PA a son of the late Marion and Rose (Maccharelli) Quahliero, Sr. He was a graduate of New Castle High School in 1947. While serving in the US Marine Corp based in Panama, he played in the Marine Corp band and the All-Navy Baseball Team. After being discharged, he received a letter of recommendation for a tryout with the New York Yankees in Poughkeepsie, NY. He later played baseball and softball in many area leagues, playing for the Croton AC’s in the City League, Universal Rundle, Crescent Café and Liberty AC’s. He also bowled for the Wabash Bears. For many years, he played drums with many local bands. He retired from Elliott Brothers Steel where he worked as a shipper.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche L. (DiCola) Quahliero, three sons, Vern Leonard of Tampa, FL, Anthony J. Quahliero, Jr. and his wife Melanie of Struthers, OH, and Perry L. Quahliero and his wife Tina of New Castle, three brothers, Marion Quahliero, Jr., Louis Quahliero and his wife Joanne and John Quahliero and his wife Bonita, all of New Castle, six grandchildren, Anthony Eric Leonard and his wife Amanda, Christopher Dane Leonard, Ryan, AJ, Jacqueline and Angelina Quahliero, five step grandchildren and ten step great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother Louis and an infant sister Catherine.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 from 5 pm to 8 pm.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at 10:30 am at the William F. DeCarbo Memorial Chapel. Father Kevin Beaton of St. John the Baptist Maronite Church will be officiating. Burial will be in Parkside Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by the Kirila Funeral Home.
