Elvira Ruozzo, 94, formerly of North Lafayette Street, Mahoningtown, died Friday, April 1, 2016 at Jameson Memorial Hospital.
She was born August 16, 1921 to the late Cesidio and Liberata (DiFiore) DiThomas. She married Domenick Ruozzo July 4, 1942. For 64 years they lived and loved their church, family and friends in their community of Mahoningtown. Domenick passed away April 12, 2007.
Elvira graduated from New Castle High School, and loved her first job working in the “gold room” at Shenango China. She later held positions at Mahoning Finance, New Castle School of Trades, and the office of St. Lucy Catholic Church.
Elvie’s faith guided her throughout her life. She and her husband, Dom, attended mass daily. Even as her health declined, she prayed and shared her love of God until her death.
Elvira loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and attending band concerts, especially when Dom was playing the trumpet with the Blue Coat and Red Coat bands. She belonged to the “Variety Club,” a group of childhood friends who met for 62 years to play cards and share their favorite foods.
As a young parent, she was active in Mahoning School PTA and St. Lucy Holy Rosary Society.
Elvie resided at the Golden Hill Nursing Home during her declining years where her warm smile and hats were appreciated by those who cared for her.
Elvira is survived by her daughter, Liberta, and son, Thomas. She took pride in her sacrifices to enable her children to graduate from college. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers Arnold Thomas, John DiThomas, Tony “Catty” DiThomas, Dante DiThomas, Dan Thomas, a sister Olga Frederick, and niece Josephine Frederick Hawkins.
Liberta and Tommy extend love and gratitude to Elvie’s personal caretaker, Diane Dattilo who spent countless hours making her comfortable and happy. A special thank you to the aides, LPN’s and staff at the Golden Hill Nursing Home who cared for Elvie and provided comfort to her family.
