Joseph E. Retort, Sr., 82, of Carbon-Micco Rd., Edinburg, died Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. He was born December 27, 1926 in Hillsville, a son of the late Frank and Rose Retort. He was married to Charlotte A. (Pagley) Retort who died on November 17, 1965. Mr. Retort was a truck driver for CD Ambrosia Trucking retiring after over 45 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving with the 82nd Airborne in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Retort enjoyed hunting, gardening and spending time with people. He brought eggs to people in the Hillsville-Edinburg area for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, Deborah J. Tomon and her husband Ronald of New Castle, three sons, Joseph E. Retort, Jr. and his wife Beth of Pittsburgh, Charles T. and David A. Retort both of New Castle, two brothers, Donald Retort of Hillsville, and Julian Retort of New York, one sister, Theresa Sandullo of Boardman, OH, five grandchildren, Mike, Greg, Ronny and Rachel Toman and Zachary Retort and two great grandchildren, Andrew and Ava Tomon.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis ‘Red’ Retort, and an infant brother Louie Retort, and his sister Angeline LaRocco.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Ave., on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 10:30 am at St. Lawrence Church. Father James Downs of Christ the King Parish will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 am. Burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the cemetery.
