Donald J. Smith

Donald J. Smith, 74, of Ryan Avenue, New Castle, died Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Golden Hill Nursing Home in New Castle. He was born December 18, 1942 in New Castle, a son of the late Stanley and Elizabeth (Goydk) Smith. He was married to Patricia M. (White) Smith on July 21, 1962, she survives in New Castle. Mr. Smith was a professor at Kent State University in Adult Education for many years. He then worked as a trainer at Gateway Rehab. He was also owner of Triple S Auto Sales for 10 years. Mr. Smith was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam Era serving all over the world. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Senior Professional Bowlers Association. He also enjoyed boating, playing cards and going to the casino and he loved to write. He wrote a bowling column for the New Castle News and other papers for a number of years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by four children, Dawn L. Smith and her husband Allan Darrow of Las Vegas, NV, Ron Smith and his wife Lori of New Castle, Suzanne M. Martin and her husband Clint of New Castle, and Rob J. Smith of New Castle, two brothers, Stanley Smith of Woodland Hills, CA, and Brian Smith of New Castle, five grandchildren and one great grandson.

Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue on Monday, January 23, 2017 from 5 PM to 8 PM. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the funeral home Monday at 7:45 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Vitus Church. Father Joe Codori of St. Vitus Church will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM. Burial will be in the Parkside Cemetery.
