Mafalda 'Muff' M. Emery

Mafalda ‘Muff’ M. Emery, 86, of E. Home St., died Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. She was born October 15, 1923 in New Castle, a daughter of the late Domenick Sfreddo and Jennie (Polcaro) Sfreddo Rozzi. She married Gomer S. Emery on December 18, 1945, he survives in New Castle. Mrs. Emery began her work life as the chief store keeper and tool department manager for the Johnson Bronze, where she met her husband of 63 years. She later worked as a salesperson at Russo's Rexall Drug Store on Croton Avenue and ended her work life as the Director of Admission at Golden Hill Nursing Home and the Hill View Manor. She served as a democratic committee women for a number of years and was an avid Pirate and Steelers fan. Mafalda was known in her youth to be a "good ball player", herself. Muff enjoyed playing cards with her friends and gambling in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. She also loved to cook for and spend time with her family. Mrs. Emery will also be sadly missed by her dog Muffin and her special friend Betty.

She is survived by two sons, Tony 'Gomer' Emery and John P. Emery, both of New Castle, one daughter, Anita M. Emery of Whispering Pines, NC, eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jennie Cialella Smiley, one nephew, Anthony G. Sfreddo, and three brothers, Frank, Ettore, and Anthony Sfreddo.

Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue, on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 5 pm to 8 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 10:00 am at St. Vitus Church. Father John Petrarulo of St. Vitus Church will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 am. Burial will be in the St. Vitus Cemetery.
