Mike F. Scalzo, 74, of 709 Cunningham Ave., died Tuesday afternoon, May 30, 2006 at his home in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was born April 7, 1932 in New Castle, Pennsylvania a son of Rosario and Grace (Casillo) Scalzo. His parents precede him in death. He married Josephine (Beckman) Scalzo on August 23, 1952. She survives in New Castle. Mr. Scalzo retired in 1980 from Babcock & Wilcox in Beaver Falls as a bricklayer after 22 years. He previously worked for Republic Steel in Youngstown, OH as a bricklayer for 10 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War serving with the Heavy Tank Company of the 65th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Army. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant and the United Nations Service Medal. Mr. Scalzo was a member of the American Legion and the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division. He enjoyed antiques and antique cars and was also a member of the Hudson, Essex & Teiraplane Antique Car Club
In addition to his wife, he is survived by, 1 daughter, Mrs. Joe (Lynn A.) Mike of Poland, OH, 1 son, Michael R. Scalzo and his wife Kristin of New Castle, PA, 3 brothers, George Scalzo and Joel Scalzo of New Castle, PA, and Gary Scalzo of Mentor, OH, 4 sisters, Kate Bell of Frizzleburg, PA, Margaret Kimmell, Mary Colella, and Ruth Joki all of New Castle, PA, 6 grandchildren and 1 step-granson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Angeline Ostapowicz and Sara Griswald.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Ave., on Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 2, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Vitus Church. Father Robert Zajdel of St. Vitus Chruch will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 am. Burial will be in the Castle View Memorial Gardens. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform a military funeral service at the cemetery.
