Donald Wayne Turner, 76, of Johnson Road, New Bedford, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, comfortably at his home with his wife Deloris, sister, Lois, and son Douglas, by his side. He was born May 18, 1933 in Stewart Twp., Pennsylvania, the fifth of thirteen children, to the late John William and Alverta ‘Sis’ (Hall) Turner. He married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, his beautiful Deloris Marie (Hiles) Turner on December 19, 1955, after completing his tour of duty and being honorably discharged from the United States Army. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage together, recently celebrating their anniversary with a renewed love and commitment, and had three sons. Don was very proud of his service in the U.S. Army, having achieved the rank of Corporal. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict receiving three bronze starts and serving with the 803rd MP Company. He retired after 30 years from the Youngstown Sheet and Tube, as a bricklayer in the open hearth unit and served as the union shop steward and grievance boss. He was a member of the Mahoning Sportsman Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Having a special attraction for animals, Don was a gentleman farmer, and appreciated his time spent outdoors with his garden and many pets over the years, most recently his dogs, Lucky, Elvis, and his faithful companion, Milo, who honored him with a constant bedside vigil in his final days. He was also a member of the Bessemer VFW, and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow veterans, and served as their chaplain.

‘Duck’, as he was affectionately known, is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, his devoted ‘Lori’, three sons, six siblings and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.
