Anthony Samuel Mastrian, M.D., 74, of Neshannock Township, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle. He was born March 22, 1935, in Sharon, PA, to the late Anthony and Edith (Tomasetti) Mastrian, he was known by most as “Sonny.” He graduated from New Castle High School as one of the 1952 Leapers. He then went on to Washington and Jefferson College and later Temple Medical School in Philadelphia where he graduated in 1959. After serving as a Commander in the United States Public Health Service, he retired to settle in his hometown of New Castle and opened his surgical practice in 1968. He served the community as a General Surgeon at both the (then) St. Francis Hospital and at Jameson Memorial Hospital, where he served on many committees and as President of the Medical Staff at each hospital during different points in his career. After retiring in 1993, he continued to serve the community as physician at the Lawrence County Jail and the St. Francis Hospital Psychiatric ward.
Anthony was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Camillus Church in New Castle. He also participated in the Lawrence County Catholic Men’s retreat group. He cherished his many retreat weekends at the St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center in Pittsburgh.
He his survived by his devoted and loving wife of 48 years, Nancy (James) Mastrian, who was at his side, along with his family at the time of his death.
Anthony is also survived by his children: Anthony Mastroianni of Sewickley, PA; Jeanne Cipollini and her husband John of Bryn Mawr, PA; Michael Mastrian and his wife, Theresa of Alexandria, VA; Christine Avallone and her husband, Mark of Rockville, MD; John Mastrian of New Castle; Stephen Mastrian and his wife, Stephanie of Scottsdale, AZ. Anthony has been blessed with 9 grandchildren ranging in age from 18 years to 4 months old: Alex, Angela, Annette, Stephen, Zachary, Thomas, Abigail, Dominic and Madeline. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Don (Annette) Colucci of New Castle and his nephew Donald Colucci of New Castle.
He was extremely dedicated to his patients, and his family and friends will remember him as a person who cared deeply about the well being of others, and who opened his heart and home to all.
In continuation of his dedication, even in death, he decided to donate his remains to a medical school for the advancement of research. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 22, 2010 at 11:00 am at St. Camillus Church. Father Thomas J. Lewandowski will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome a donation in his memory to St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, 148 Monastery Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15203. Thank you to all of the healthcare professionals who provided the same care and dedication to him that he provided to others during his life.
