Harry J. ‘Alkie’ Smiley, 78, of E. Reynolds Street, formerly of Hamilton Avenue, died Friday, June 18, 2010 at his home in New Castle. He was born October 27, 1931 in New Castle, a son of the late William and Mamie (Duddy) Smiley. He married June C. (Keaton) Smiley on April 11, 1957, she survives in New Castle. Mr. Smiley retired after 27 years from the Crane Co./Pentex Foundry. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War serving with the "Big Red One" in Germany. Mr. Smiley enjoyed weightlifting, gardening, boxing, dancing, and the Steelers. He also loved walking at Cascade Park and spending time with his family.

He is survived by two daughters, Rhonda L. Ritchie and her fiancé John Ridenbaugh, and Lori L. Coyne and her husband James, both of New Castle, PA, two sons, Jeffrey D. Smiley and his wife Lorri of Ellwood City, and Brian S. Smiley and his wife Gina of New Castle, one brother, Ray Smiley of Biloxi, MS, one sister, Marian Salamon of New Castle, and eight grandchildren, Dani Lee Ritchie, Jordan Smiley, Bridget, Kylee & Sean Coyne, Braydan Smiley, and Jordan and Morgan Joseph.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Chester, James, William, and Paul Smiley, and one sister, Lorraine Smiley.

Private funeral services were held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Avenue. Pastor Frederick Gilbert of Independent Methodist Church officiated. Entombment will be in the Parkside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Smiley’s memory to the Southern Care Hospice, 2656 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105.
