Louis P. ‘Nehi’ Rainey, 91, of W. Wabash St., New Castle, died Monday morning, March 12, 2007 at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was born December 7, 1915 in Bedford, Indiana a son of the late Salvatore and Agnes (Martino) Rainey. He married Marie ‘Dolly’ (Matarazzo) Rainey on February 15, 1969. She survives in New Castle. Mr. Rainey worked for the B & O Railroad as a machinist helper retiring after 40 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He served with the Army Air Corp. as a Private 1st class and then as Military Police for the Army with the 79th Infantry Division in Europe. For his service he received the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the European, African, Middle East Service Medal. Mr. Rainey was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Parish, St. Lucy Church. He was a life member of the Holy Name Society of St. Lucy Church and a former treasurer of the society and was awarded a Life Service Award from the Pittsburgh Diocesan Union of Holy Name Socities. He was also a member of the St. Marguerite Society, Eagles Ariel #455, Sons of Columbus #74, American Legion Post #343, VFW Post 267 and the International Brotherhood of Fireman and Oilers. Mr. Rainey enjoyed reading and traveling and was an avid sports fan. He was a season ticket holder of New Castle High School football and basketball for over 70 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by, one daughter, Christa Marie Rainey of New Castle, PA and a number of nieces and nephews and a number great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann M. Maiorano and Florence D. Tommelleo, and two brothers John Rainey and Alfred Rainey.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 from 5 pm to 8 pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 15, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Lucy Church. Father Kenneth Keene of St. Vincent de Paul Parish will be officiating. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 am. Burial will be in the St. Lucy Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military funeral rites at the cemetery.
