Clementina ‘Clara’ DeSimone Izzo, 92, of Mahoningtown died Sunday, April 2, 2023 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman, OH surrounded by her family. She was born in New Castle on September 7, 1930, a daughter of the late Domenico and Clementina (Fusco) DeSimone. She married Anthony F. Izzo on October 3, 1953, who survives in New Castle. Mrs. Izzo worked as an operator for Bell Telephone prior to focusing on raising her family. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish- St. Vincent de Paul, and the Catholic Daughters of America, Women of Faith. She was a devoted catholic who enjoyed volunteering her time cleaning the church, sewing baptismal garments, and assisting with church bazaars and Lenten fish dinners. She was also a member of the 1937 Club and the Class of ’48 Club. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, cooking, reading, card parties, and above all spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When she couldn’t see them in person, she stayed in close contact with friends and family through Facebook, her messages always in CAPITAL LETTERS.
She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, friend, and neighbor. She built family traditions around holiday meals and traditional Italian baked goods. She was known for her taralles and took great pleasure in sharing her recipes and baking techniques. Everyone understood what it meant when she “made 6 eggs”.
She gave lovingly for her time and talents, and ensured each of her children and grandchildren had a homemade afghan, hat, and/or scarf. She never let us leave her house without two kisses- one for each cheek- because “you can’t walk crooked”. Her humor, stories, and words of wisdom will echo in our ears forever.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, David Izzo and his special friend, Lori Carvell of Poland, OH, Mark Izzo and his wife Susan of Canfield, OH, Matthew Izzo of New Castle, and Annette Bonham and her husband Tom of Cranberry Township, one sister, Catherine Jankiewicz and her husband Stanley of Boardman, OH, four grandchildren, Theresa Stier and her husband Ken, Nolan Bonham and his partner, Carrie Byrd, Sean Bonham, and Simone Izzo, and two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Nora. All who will miss her beyond measure. She is also survived by a number of loving nieces and nephews
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by, three brothers, Lawrence DeSimone, Anthony ‘Topper’ DeSimone, and Charles DeSimone.
